Voice, style, genre, niche, whatever…

July 16, 2009

How did you find yours? I’m in search of mine.

For the past few months I’ve written so much stuff I’m writing in my sleep. I’ve written stories/essays that are funny, homey, dark, you name it, depending on where the muse leads me around by the nose at the time.

This morning I took a quiz “Which crazy writer are you?” – and my result was Hunter S. Thompson. Not so sure I’d fit the lifestyle he led, but the world view would be pretty close to the same… and it sparked an idea for yet another essay, a scathing commentary on society as a whole, and the society that surrounds me in particular…. so I’m soon going to have an essay done in that ‘angry FTW’ style as well.

I like all the things I’ve done – but I’m not sure which is ‘me’ as a writer… which one ‘fits’.

Do I have to choose? Do I have to spit forth the same style of composition each time I put cyberpen to cyberpaper?

I’m thinking really not…

Tell me about your voice, your style… what is it? How did you know when you’d found it?
